ISLANDERS’ DEFENSE CRUMBLES IN FINAL HALF AND HAMMOND’S WONDERFUL OFFENSE TRIUMPHS "It was Rock Island who went down in defeat to the mighty $20,000 team of All-Stars. It was the greatest game to date played in Rock Island. The Independents put up a great fight and every man gave everything he had in him." Game Summary by RII.com Hammond won the coin toss and chose to receive, defending the West goal. Ursella and the Independents lined up and the game began. The kick came down at the 20-yard line, Ghee caught the ball and returned it out to his 30. Des Jardiens punted on the first play, the kick was a deep kick, Ursella raced back to get the ball but could not escape and was downed at his 10-yard line. It appeared that Hammond was happy to play a field position game and see if the Independents could even move the ball on their defense. Mansfield and Chicken combined for 8 and on third down Henry failed to move the chains. Ursella got off a good punt and Ghee was stopped on his own 35-yard line. Hammond was able to get 8 yards on 3 carries and it appears on fourth down they were stopped. Rock Island took over near Hammond’s 45-yard line. Hammond had not made a first down and appeared to not respect the Independents. Ursella lost 5 yards on his first carry. Mansfield and Henry go the Independents back to the Hammond 40. On fourth down Ursella punted to Ghee who was tackled by Lyle at his own 15-yard line. Surely not expecting to be in such a tight field position battle, Des Jardien punted the ball out of danger. The punt was bad and Ursella caught the ball and was downed at Hammond’s 35-yard line. The Independents took the field for the second time in the visitors territory and could not afford to let this golden opportunity slip away. Chicken took the ball for 4. Henry juggled a low pass but reeled it in gained 1. On third and 5 Fred Chicken broke the left tackle and into the clear, he was tackled at the Hammond 9-yard line. On first and goal for Rock Island, Ursella called his number and took the ball to the 5-yard line. Hammond’s defense tightened as Chicken was able to get the ball to the Hammond 1 yard line on the next two plays. The ball rest on the 1 yard line, on fourth down Ursella decided to try to punch it in instead of attempting a field goal. The Independents lines up and again Chicken got the ball and took it over goal. Ursella’s kick was perfect. ROCKISLAND, 7; HAMMOND, 0

Hammond elected to kick. Barrett’s first kick sailed out of bounds, same with the second. The Independents caught another break; by rule after two unsuccessful attempts they got the ball at mid field. Hammond held and Ursella punted on fourth and 3 to go. Ghee was downed at his 25-yard line. On first down Des Jardiens punted it back to Rock Island. Again the kick was horrible and the ball went out of bounds after 15 yards at Hammond’s 40 yard line. The Second Quarter started with a carry by Chicken for 3. Ursella broke through for 7 more and a first down. Not only was Rock Island able to move the ball on Hammond, they had already scored and were on the march again. Hammond must have seen a problem because after stopping Mansfield they sent in Kohl for McGay at left end. Henry was stopped on the following play. Ursella attempted a drop kick which sailed wide of the uprights; Hammond took possession at the 20-yard line. After only gaining 8 yards to this point in the game and numerous bad punts and kickoffs, Hammond was lucky to only be down by 7 points. On the first play after the missed kick, Des Jardiens fumbled the ball; King fell on the ball for a 5 yard loss. Hammond gained 8 and then Ghee broke through the line for pretty 20 yard run and a first down. Brickley was thrown for a loss of 9 but on the next play Buland was called for offsides. Barrett was tackled for a 1 yard loss. On third down and 15 yards, George Halas snuck past the secondary and into the open. Ghee threw the ball 20 yards and Halas caught the pass and took off down the field. Mansfield gave chase and was able to catch the fleet footed Halas from behind and bring him down after a 60 yard gain. Hammond was at the 2 yard line and Brickley was able to punch it over goal for 6 points. The kicking woes continued for Hammond, Blacklock missed the easy goal kick. ROCKISLAND, 7; HAMMOND, 6 Barrett kicked to Smith who brought the ball 10 yard to the Rock Island 30. The Independents failed to gain a first down but Ursella boomed a deep punt that went out of bounds at the Hammond 20-yard line. Hammond punted the ball back and Ursella was able to return it past mid field and all the way to the Hammond 40. The exchange netted the home team 30 yards. With time winding down in the half, Rock Island lined up at the 42. Henry made 7; Chicken broke through for 10 more and a first down. From the 25 yard line Henry and Chicken gained 1 and then 2 yards. On third down Kohl threw Henry for a 5 yard loss. On fourth and 12 from the 27 yard line, Ursella hit Marshall who was able to cover the 12 yards for a first down. The crowd was buzzing, the Independents were driving and time was running out on the half. Mansfield gained 3 and then Chicken broke through for 7 more and another first down. The Independents hurried to the line and from the 5, Chicken took the ball for 3 yards. The crowd was in pandemonium knowing the Independents were on the verge of scoring but also knowing time was about to expire on the half. Apparently with the noise and commotion the players could not catch the signal and it caused a delay. The whistle sounded and on second down from the 3, the Independents golden opportunity slipped into the air. |
The Second Half began with Ursella returning the kick to the 20-yard line. Rock Island was held to 8 yards and punted. Ghee took the punt and returned it out the midfield. Rock Island held and once again Des Jardiens hit a horrible punt, this one going almost straight out of bounds. Rock Island took over at their own 48. Ursella made 3, then Henry gained 10 more and a first down. Chicken carried for 3 yards, but on the play Hammond was offside. Unfortunately Chicken was slow to get up and he had once again injured the shoulder that kept him out of last week’s game. Swanson came in to replace Fred. On second down, Ursella pulled up for a forward pass, which was thrown over Marshall and intercepted by Brickley at his own 10-yard line. Another opportunity slipped away for the Independents. They had been stopped at the 1-yard line, they had missed a drop kick, they had taken possession of the ball several times near midfield, yet they only had 7 points to show for it. Hammond went to work; they dug deep into their playbook and used every tactic they knew. Ghee made 16 yards and a first down in two plays. Barrett followed with 18 more on the next two plays. Brickley gained 2 and Hammond was at midfield. The quarter ended with Hammond on the march. The Fourth Quarter started just as the third had ended. Brickley ran for 8 and a first down. King added 10 more. Fats Smith substituted for Wyland after he injured his ankle. Nothing was going right for Rock Island and on the next play Barrett ran wide around end, into the open field and 30 yards for a touchdown. Ghee missed an easy goal kick, Oak Smith returned the kick out to the 22 yard line. Rock Island could get nothing going and was forced to punt. Hammond took over at their 40-yard line and once again drove the ball down the field. Rock Island could do nothing to keep Hammond out of scoring position. Finally Rock Island forced Hammond to attempt a drop kick. With a chance to put the Independents down 8 points, King missed the kick. Ursella was back deep and scooped the ball off the ground and ran all the way out to his 40-yard line. Ursella hit Buland for a 20 yard gain and it appeared Rock Island had a shot to pull the game out. Hammond’s defense made some good stops and with only minutes remaining, Ursella punted trying to pin the All-Stars deep in their own territory. Hammond was able to move the chains and held possession at midfield as time expired. Final Score, Source -Rock Island Argus October 13, 1919 |
