TOM HENRY IS INDIVIDUAL STAR OF GAME, TWICE CROSSING LINE OF OPPONENTS FOR TOUCHDOWNS
Windy City Team Discovers Offense and Defense of Locals Beyond Expectations

"Despite heavy rain, Douglas Park was in fairly good condition. The Independent’s speedy backs were still able to travel at a fast clip throughout. With threatening weather conditions sill lingering at 2:15PM, there were few people inside the gates. Forty-five minutes later, the grandstands were nearly full and once again Auto-mobiles lined every available space along the sidelines. Outplaying the Hamburg A.C. of Chicago throughout the game, Rock Island gained a comparatively easy victory over a highly reputed team from the windy city by a score of 21 to 0."

Game Summary by RII.com

Ursella won the toss and chose to receive; Rock Island was to defend the west goal. The teams took the field and Elsner kicked it away for the Hamburgs. Oke Smith brought the ball out to the 30-yard line where the Independents offense took over. Ursella ran for 2, Henry broke through for 10, Ursella carried for 6 and then 5 more as he crossed midfield. The Hamburgs appeared to have no answer to the Minnesota Shift and the Independent’s offensive line. The Independents continued the march with Henry and Ursella taking the ball to the Hamburgs 27. On First down Paddy Quinn broke through for 7 more. On 2nd and 3 from the 20, Henry broke into the open and carried the ball across the goal for the touchdown. Henry crossed the goal near one side of the field; Ursella missed the difficult angled kick. ROCK ISLAND, 6; HAMBURGS 0

The Hamburgs again chose to kick; Quinn caught the ball and brought it back 10 yards out to the 30-yard line. On the drive that followed the full back Smith had a nice 9 yard carry before the drive stalled out after a 15 yard unnecessary roughness call. Ursella had a bad punt and the Hamburgs took over at their own 45 yard line. The Independents defense held and the Hamburgs punted and the quarter ended.

The Second Quarter started with the Independents punting the ball from their own 30 back to the Hamburgs 20-yard line, Stegar caught the booming punt and was tackled before even gaining a yard. The Hamburgs immediately punted it back to Ursella who was able to get out to his 40-yard line. The Independents had gained 10 yards on the exchange and the offense took the field. Henry, Smith and Ursella shared carries taking the ball inside the visitor's 40-yard line. Quinn ran off tackle for another 7 and from the 22 yard line, Henry broke through again for another touchdown. Again Ursella missed the goal kick. ROCK ISLAND, 12; HAMBURGS, 0.

Again the Hamburgs elected to kick after the score. The Independents gained a first down but then had to punt. With little time left in the half, the Hamburgs tried to gain a first and were held at their own 40. With time for one play, the Independents threw a pass which was intercepted by Peters. The half ended as Smith was tackled at his own 40-yard line.

The Independents received the ball to start the second half. Quinn ran the kick out to the 25-yard line. Ursella punted the ball away and the teams again exchanged punts. Rock Island began a drive that included a 10 yard forward pass from Ursella to Swanson. Henry added another 13 on 2 carries. Elsner ended the Independents bid to score as he intercepted a forward pass down near his own 20-yard line. Trying to kick the ball out of danger, Olson hit a poor kick and Rock Island got the ball on the Hamburg’s 25-yard line. The Independents attempted several more passes but could not complete any. The Hamburgs held and took over at the 25 and once again punted. Ursella caught the ball at his 35-yard line and broke free streaking down the sideline all the way back to the point of the kick. The Independents were held and Ursella missed a kick from his 27-yard line. The Hamburgs punted back to the Independents to end the third quarter.

The Forth Quarter began with the Independents in possession at midfield. The Independents again tried to move the ball through the air, Sacks intercepted the first pass and the Hamburgs took over with their best field position of the day.

Down by only 12 points the Hamburgs moved the ball towards the goal and gained their first, first down of the game. Unfortunately, on the next play Henry intercepted a forward pass at his own 38-yard line. The Independents took over and began another drive on goal. Henry, Ursella, Quinn and Swanson carried the load. Rock Island felt comfortable with the lead and the ball and on 2nd and 8 Mansfield took the ball on a end back play and ran for 12. From the 2-yard line, Jorgenson lined up and took the ball over goal for his first score of the season. Ursella kicked the goal and the score was, ROCK ISLAND, 19; HAMBURGS, 0.

The Hamburgs kicked the ball away and Mansfield took the short kick from his 35-yard line out across midfield to the 40. With time expiring, Ursella punted the ball and Wolf was downed in the shadow of his own goal. The only option for the Hamburgs was to punt, a bad snap streaked over Olsen’s his head and he raced back and fell on the ball in his own goal for a Independents Safety. ROCK ISLAND, 21; HAMBURGS, 0.

The ball was punted from the 20-yard line and Rock Island held possession as the game clock expired. Final Score, ROCKISLAND, 21; HAMBURGS, 0.

Quotes From The Article

Tom Henry- was the scintillating performer of the afternoon; he carried the ball for over 90 yards, had 2 touchdowns runs of 20 yards and intercepted the ball late in the game to seal the victory. Henry’s terrific offense electrified the crowd, he followed interference good and seemed to circle the end or run off tackle at will as the signal indicated.

Injury Update – Fred Chicken watched from the sideline, still recovering from a shoulder injury he received last week against Rockford. Paddy Quinn played the entire game at right half for Chicken. Jorgenson relieved Dempsey after 3 quarters due to the lingering ankle injury. Ursella took a knee to the neck after a big gain and needed to call for time, it is a very rare occasion when Rube has to call for the water bucket.

STAR OF GAME

Defense – The work of Lyle and Buland on the right side of the line in breaking up plays and covering on punts was brilliant. Mansfield and Dempsey displayed excellent defensive work at ends.

Visitors Surprised – The Hamburgs were taken by surprise, they expected victory and the strength of the Islander’s offense and defense won their admiration and approval by games end. At the start of the second half, they boasted they had solved the shift plays, but the long runs of the Independents later in the game showed otherwise.

Rival News – The game that was to take place at Browning Field in Moline between the Davenport A.C. and the Moline Indians was called off. Both side blame the other. Coach Sies of Davenport was so upset over the cancellation that he threatened to fire his staff if anyone tried to schedule another game between the two teams. The cancellation was thought to have help the attendance figures in Rock Island though there were reports that a fight broke out in the stands between a group of Moline and Davenport fans.
