INDEPENDENTS LOSE CLOSE GAME TO FAMOUS TEAM FROM MINNEAPOLIS November 4th - The famous Minneapolis Marines traveled for the first time to Rock Island. The Marines had defeated Davenport 40-0 earlier in the season. The Marines introduced Rube Ursella, Fred Chicken, Bobby Marshall, Eddie Novak and Walt Buland to Rock Island that day - Players that would play many more games in Douglas Park The Independents played a close game and could have won. The Marines were known as the best team in the far west, even though Rock Island didn't win this game proved the Independents were of equal caliber. Source -Rock Island Argus November 5th, 1917 |
