UNDEFEATED MAYWOOD TEAM TO GIVE INDEPENDENTS A TOUGH GAME Voight, Tinnie and Shily all played for Illinios coach Bob Zuppke in 1910-1912 when the team twice was names national prep champions. Source -Rock Island Argus November 21st, 1916 INDEPENDENTS WINS OVER COLLEGIANS The gaem did not start until 3:10PM due to the late arrival of the team from Maywood. Rock Island won the toss and elected to defend the south goal which gave them the wind at their back. The Independents held the visitors to just 2 first downs on the day. Rock Island worked on their forward passing and trick plays but Maywood was up for the challenge. Going into the 4th quater the locals were only up by a score of 7-0. The Independents put the game away shortly after an interception by Loius Kolls at the Maywood 30-yard line. The big center ran the ball back to the 5-yard line where Brindley was able to punch the ball in. Source -Rock Island Argus November 27st, 1916 |
