INDEPENDENTS LOSE DAVENPORT RIVALS

After heavy morning rains and with threatening skies the Independents and Davenport A.C. met before a crowd of 4,000 tri-city football fans. The Davenport rooters arrived in numbers including 7 trucks that parked along the west side of the field. The supporters wore novelty caps and one of the trucks was designated for “fannettes” only. Walt Brindley was introduced to the home folks and started the game at right half.

The Game – Playing in several inches of mud neither team could get much going. The first two quarters saw the two team exchange punts; neither team had a good chance of punching the ball over goal.

Due to the conditions, neither team had much success running around end; both teams resorted to line plunges to move the ball. In the 3rd quarter the Independents made a critical mistake when on 4th down they elected to go for it. The ball was resting on the Rock Island 40yd line and Captain Murphy called for a run. With 1 yard to gain Quinn took the ball and then lost his footing as he pushed towards the line. Davenport took possession. Kuehl gained 5 yards on a short run and another short pass completion. Then on 3rd down Fort hit Freeberg on a pass over the middle which gained 25 yards. Kuehl and Freeberg advanced the ball to the 1yd line where “Bum” Stuehmer carried it over right end for the score. The kick out was dropped so no goal kick was attempted.

The Independents had one last chance when Fort missed a drop kick short. Bredimus picked up the ball and broke across midfield only to be forced out of bounds at the Davenport 30 yard line. The Independents were held and the game ended shortly after. For Rock Island, Brindley, Swanson and Quinn were the main ground gainers. For Davenport, Fort, Kuehl, Holm and Freeberg were the stars.
