INDEPENDENTS WIN HOME OPENER

October 22nd - Jack Roche and the other Rock Island team finally disbanded allowing the Independents to have the rights to play games at Island City Park. The Independents hosted the Greyhounds from Aurora and had little trouble putting them away.

The Game - Rock Island was able to move the ball well in the first quarter but several costly fumbles cost the team any chance of scoring.
In the second quarter from the 30 yard line “Nips” Murphy hit Kolls on a nice pass for a touchdown. The Greyhounds elected to kick and the Independents drove down for another score. This time Murphy carried the ball over goal on a botched play where both backs assumed the ball was going to the other. Murphy found nobody to hand the ball to and so he turned and ran it over himself.

Second half. Bredimus; the quick little 140 pound back took the kick at his 10 and broke across midfield to the Aurora 40 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Murphy kept the ball and dodged 5 or 6 defenders and raced 40 yards for the score. In the 4th quarter the Independents subbed for most of their starters. The team failed to move the ball well, penalties, fumbles and poor play resulted in no more scores for the team. Kolls tried a couple drop kicks but each came up short. Fortunately for the Independents, the Greyhounds played no better. The Independents held on to win the game.
