INDEPENDENTS LOSE: EVANSTON CLAIMS MIDDLE WEST TITLE November 29th, 2:35 - The field was in good condition as a light mist fell making the ball slippery. The Independent chose to defend the south goal.
|
Evanston Score - The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through three quarters. Finally in the 4th quarter the North Ends were able to break the tie when Falcon hit Hanna on a 30 yard touchdown strike. Hanna made a nice run as he had to elude two Rock Island defenders. |
Chances - In the 3rd quarter Ernie MacManus booted a drop kick from the 25 yard line which passed below the bar by a few inches. Later in the 4th period it looked as if the Independents might tie the game. They worked their way to the Evanston 30 yard line before being held on downs. |
Summary - After the game it was learned that the locals were not just playing against the average Independent team. All the players on the Evanston team are athletes; the team practice 5 times per week and does nothing else during the season but play football. Fullback Miller said the game vs. the Independents were their toughest game in 2 seasons. Source -Rock Island Argus November 30th, 1914 |
