Game Time 3P.M. - The Olympics were able to move the ball on the opening drive. They ran a criss-cross play for 30 yards and then Meersman hit Sies on a 33 yard pass play. The drive stalled out and Herb Sies missed a place kick. Later in the second period the Independents put together a drive. It appeared to take the lead on a drop kick by MacManus but Moline was offsides. Rock Island continued the drive and then Art Salzmann carried the ball over from the 1. On the play Berry the Moline left guard was knocked out. He later had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. |
In the second half MacManus missed a 20 yard place kick which would have put the game away. Late in the 3rd quarter MacManus was hit in the chest and had to retire from the game. Whisler subbed in at quarterback. On the first play Davenport fumbled the ball on the Rock Island 10 yard line. Moline was set to tie the game and possibly steal a win with the goal kick. Instead on 3rd down quarterback Coyle fumbled the ball on the exchange with his fullback. Jack Paridon scooped up the ball and with some good blocking from Robb and Whisler he was able to take it 90 yards for the score. Source -Rock Island Argus October 5th, 1914 |
