INDEPENDENTS TAKE LEAD LATE TO BEAT PEORIA

The Independents had a rare road game Sunday. The team traveled to Peoria where a light rain fell making the field sloppy and slow.

Rock Island took the ball first. Neither team was able to score in the opening period.

In the second quarter Peoria drove down near the Independents goal line. The ball carrier appeard to be stopped, the whistle blew and afterwards he lunged into the endzone. The Independents argued the score but the referee said it counted.

Rock Island took the ball to start the second half. They started the drive from their own 40 yard line. Robb ran for 10, MacManus broke a run for 40 more. MacManus called his number again and he ran the final 10 yards to even the score at 6.

In the final quarter the MacManus tried a drop kick to give the Independents the lead. The ball was at a tough angle on the 15 yard line. MacManus missed the drop kick.

Rock Island later took over possession at the 30 yard line. The Salzman brothers and Robb were able to drive the ball down to the Peoria 5. Ted Davenport took the ball on an end run and went in for the score.
