INDEPENDENTS DEFEAT MOLINE ILLINI FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

October 12th - Sloppy play characterized the game at Browning Field in front of a crowd of 1,300.

Moline held the ball for the better part of the first quarter. Both teams failed to secure the ball but Rock Island fumbled more often. Soderstrom of Moline broke through center several times causing the QB MacManus concern. On several occasions MacManus fumble the exchange between him and Coleman at center.

The Independents decided to take out their anger on the Moline ball carriers. Two 15 yard penalties for tackling out of bounds were the result. With their best chance to score the Illini tried a drop kick which failed just wide. Paridon replaced Coleman at center to see if he could fill the hole in the center of the line. Several plays later Soderstrom was laid out and had to be carted off the field.

Late in the second period after driving into Illini territory Art Salzmann broke off tackle and into the open for a 25 yard touchdown run. The punt out failed when Connelly failed to catch the ball.

The Independents buckled down in the second half. McGinnis came in at quarterback and the Independents put together several drives that fell just short.

In the 4th  quarter, leading just 6-0 a the Independent were forced to punt to Moline. The return man muffed the punt and Dooley scooped up the ball on a dead run and took it 20 yards for the score. A. Salzmann added the goal kick to make it 13-0.

Late in the quarter “Red” Swanson intercepted a Moline pass and the Independents held on for the win.

The defense did it’s job and limited the Illini to a handful of first downs on the day.
